1920 Pio Bozzi and John Ganzi meet in New York City. Both came to the U.S. from the Parma region in Italy.

1926 Bozzi and Ganzi make plans to open their own restaurant in the heart of an Italian neighborhood on Second Avenue, and register their establishment with the city. The new restaurateurs want to call it Parma, but because of their Italian accent, the name mistakenly registers as "Palm."

1931 The Palm's reputation as a steakhouse begins to take hold, thanks to Ganzi and Bozzi's willingness to cater to their clientele of local journalists from companies such as the Mirror, Hearst, King Features and UPI. When a newspaperman asked for a steak, Ganzi would run up Second Avenue to a butcher shop, buy a steak and cook it to order.

  1940's The next generation of family owners, Walter Ganzi and Bruno Bozzi, take over restaurant operations from their fathers. The Palm adds a two-pound lobster to its menu, popularizing the "surf and turf" combination. The Palm maintained its popularity during the war because Ganzi and Bozzi could get beef when it was scarce.

Late 1940s Skyscrapers are developed on the block between 44th and 45th Street and Second Avenue. Bozzi and Ganzi are offered more for The Palm buildings than they are worth today, but instead decide to stay, setting a precedent that the restaurant remain in its original Manhattan location.
 
 
1963 Palm third-generation owners, Bruce Bozzi, Jr. and Wally Ganzi, Jr., start working at the Second Avenue establishment. Bruce and Wally loosen dress restrictions (no ties and jackets required) resulting in a more relaxed atmosphere, which attracts a younger, hip clientele.

1965 Bruce Bozzi introduces the four-pound lobster to Palm customers and disproves the theory that big lobster is tough. Lobster sales increase nearly tenfold in the next few years, and The Palm is firmly established as a leading steak and seafood restaurant.

1967 The Palm expands, opening a second dining room upstairs.

Late 1960s The second-generation Bozzi and Ganzi family retire from the business.

1972 The Palm opens in Washington, DC, largely due to the encouragement of then-Ambassador to the United Nations George Bush, who complained about the lack of "good American fare" in the capital city.

1973 To keep up with customer demand in New York City, Bruce and Wally open Palm Too across Second Avenue.

1975 The Palm opens in L.A. Although The Palm is in a less-desirable section of the city at the time, the West Hollywood restaurant flourishes and becomes a mecca for celebrities.
 
 

 

  Beginning of Rapid Expansion...

 
  1977 The Palm opens in Houston.

1979 The Palm opens at the Huntting Inn in East Hampton, NY.

1980s Wally and Bruce decrease their role in day-to-day management: Wally for politics, Bruce for his family.

1980 The Palm opens in Chicago.

1981 The Palm opens in Miami.

1983 The Palm opens in Dallas.

1989 The Palm opens in Philadelphia.

1989 Fred Thimm, Bruce Bozzi's son-in-law, is appointed COO of Palm Management Corporation, continuing The Palm's family management tradition.

 
  1993 The Palm opens in Las Vegas

1995 The Palm opens in Atlanta.

1995 The original cartoons and caricatures at the New York City Palm are carefully hand-restored. For the artwork alone, each of the two dining rooms of the New York City Palm are insured for half a million dollars.

1996 The Palm restaurants across the United States celebrate their 70th anniversary. The average Palm generates four million dollars in revenue annually.

1996 The Palm opens in Boston.

1996 The Palm opens in Denver.

1996 The Palm opens in Chicago.

1997 The Palm opens in Charlotte.

1998 The Palm opens in San Juan.
The Palm's new Loyalty Program, the 837 Club, is rolled out and tested in its first market - Washington, DC.


 
  1999 The Palm opens in Times Square, New York.

1999 The Palm opens in Tysons Corner, Virginia at Tysons II.

2000 The Palm launches its website -- www.thepalm.com -- to rave reviews.

2000 The Palm opens its third Texas location in San Antonio; it is the 20th Palm location across the continent.

2000 The James Lane Café at the Hedges Inn opens year round, making it The Palm's second East Hampton location.

2000 The 837 Club is implemented company wide.

2000 The Palm opens in Nashville.

2001 The Palm opens in Orlando, Florida.

2001 The Palm opens in Tampa, Florida.

2001 The Palm opens in Troy, Michigan.

2001 The Palm celebrates its 75th Anniversary.

2002 The Palm opens in Cancun, Mexico.

2002 The Palm opens in downtown Los Angeles.

2002 The 28th Palm opens in Coral Gables, Florida.
